Udaipur, July 25, 2025 - As part of the monsoon celebrations, the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC), Udaipur, will host a two-day event titled Malhar starting July 26 at Shilpgram’s Darpan auditorium, where renowned artists will present soulful classical performances.

WZCC Director Furqan Khan announced that the event will begin at 7:00 pm on July 26 with Muzaffar Rehman’s presentation of Taal Vadya Kacheri, a rhythmic percussion ensemble. Following this, acclaimed dancer Maya Kulshreshtha will perform a Kathak dance recital.

On the second day, July 27, Pandit Subhash Ghosh will present a performance on a unique instrument called Swar Ragini, which he has himself developed. The instrument combines the sounds of the veena, sarod and guitar. After this, the programme will conclude with an Odissi dance performance by Vani Madhav and her troupe.

The Malhar programme will start at 7:00 pm on both days with entry free for all.

Rehman’s performance of Taal Vadya Kacheri will feature a variety of percussion instruments known as Avanaddha Vadya, which are instruments with membranes made of leather or skin — such as tabla, pakhawaj, dholak and nagada. In Indian classical music, Taal Vadya Kacheri showcases rhythm through traditional patterns. Artists perform Peshkar, Kayda, Rela and Gats in set rhythmic cycles. The finale includes selective melodies with ancient Laggi and Ladi.

Kulshreshtha’s renowned piece Krishna – The Saviour is a journey of love, surrender, strength and deep devotion, presented through Kathak. Krishna – The Saviour portrays Lord Krishna as protector, guide, friend and deity. The dance-drama explores the eternal spiritual bond between Krishna and key women figures such as Radha, Rukmini, Draupadi and Meera.
