National Workshop on Sanitation starts at Vidyabhawan

The Vidyabhavan Polytechnic College, Udaipur jointly with Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi organised a day long workshop to discuss the progress on a research project that studies the sanitation situation in Udaipur city.

As part of the research project (which began last June) to understand the urban sanitation situation in Udaipur, a joint team comprising academic staff from the Vidyabhavan Polytechnic College and Centre for Policy Research mapped water and sanitation across Udaipur city on a GIS platform.

The workshop included discussions among the researchers as to how best represent and make use of this information to improve sanitation levels. A team from Odisha who had undertaken a similar exercise in the city of Balasore presented their experience. There was also an extending discussion on the collection and use of health data.

In the afternoon session, the team presented data collected to a group of senior officials from the Municipal Corporation and the Urban Improvement Trust who gave suggestions on how the data collection may be improved.

Mr. Himmat Singh Barhat, Municipal Commissioner concluded the workshop by pointing out that the city officials and citizens should work together to improve city’s sanitation.
