About Raamnavmi

Raam Navmi is a legendry & holy fiesta of Hindus. It is also called Ram Navratra, Chaitra Maas, Shukla Paksha Navmi or Chaitra Navratri.

Chaitra (also called Chet) is the first month of Hindu New year & Ram Navmi comes in the shukla Paksha ,9th day of the first month of Hindu calendar. Hence it’s called Shukla Paksha Navmi too.

The eminent festival is celebrated as the birth day of Lord Ram, heir of King Dashrath & Kaushalya. The whole Ayodhya city walked in the air when Ram entered into this world.

According to the Wikipedia, Ram is the 7th incarnation of Dashavtara of the Vishnu.

The birth of Ram had a special purpose of the assassination of Ravan-the so called unshakable king of those times. Lord Brahma was getting all grievances about the turmoil Ravan was creating. The boon which was given to Ravan made him uncontrollable & arrogant. According to the boon, Ravan could not be killed by any God. The power of boon blinded his faith that he never even dreamt of being attacked by any human being. This brought Lord Vishnu into the scene who took guise of Ram in human form to teach Ravan a lesson for lifetime. This ramnavmi reminds us of valor & audacity. As Ram is an ideal above caste & creed, the festival is relished & cherished in the whole nation.

Celebrations include recitations of all Vedas & Vedic chantings, Akhand Paath & Ramcharitramanas. Bhajan, Keertan in the glory of Lord Ram and Prashad distribution after the pooja are common ongoing at every home. Idols of Ram, Lakshman & Sita are placed on a cradle & worshipped.

Many people follow fast (Vrata) on this occasion followed by feasting in the evening. Chariot Processions at different places for idols of Ram, Lakshman, Sita & Hanuman can be seen everywhere on this auspicious day.
