To mark the most significant day called Ashura or the 10th day of Muharram, Muslims of all sects held a large procession in the city carrying Taziya, an effigy of Imam Hussain’s mausoleum.

To mark the most significant day called Ashura or the 10th day of Muharram, Muslims of all sects held a large procession in the city carrying Taziya, an effigy of Imam Hussain’s mausoleum.

Ashura is highly respected as this day signifies the death of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala by the army of tyrant Yazid. In Udaipur, tens of Taziyas from various localities and Muslim organizations took part in the procession.

Young men carried the Taziyas on their shoulders and passed from many areas of the city that concluded at Lake Pichola. Keeping the concern of Lake Pollution, Muslims this year, had taken an oath to not to immerse the Taziyas in the water which was followed by all. This initiative was supported by Non-Muslims as well who gave tribute to Taziya and offered flowers.

Taziyas from masjid of Badi Paltan, Alipura, Mulla Talai, Dholi Bawdi, Karwadi, Mukherjee Chowk, Silawatwadi etc. were carried by men along with community people and joined the main procession at Bhattiyani Chohatta, finally ending at the shore of Lake Pichola.
