Traditional Stone Lamp laid on Lord Ayyappas birthday

The South Indian community in Udaipur celebrated the birthday of Lord Ayyappa and placed the Kalluvilokku (Traditional Stone lamp), as their gratitude to the Lord, on the auspicious day of Painkuni Uthram.

The celebrations started with the traditional Ganpati Sthapna and Jal Abhishek in the morning. Later, sandal paste was applied all over the Idol of Lord Ayyappa. The evening commenced with the lighting of more than 1100 lamps in the temple compound along with the newly consecrated traditional lamp.

The celebrations started with the traditional Ganpati Sthapna and Jal Abhishek in the morning.  Later, sandal paste was applied all over the Idol of Lord Ayyappa.  The evening commenced with the lighting of more than 1100 lamps in the temple compound along with the newly consecrated traditional lamp.

According to the information, this stone lamp has been brought from Kanyakumari in the form of a donation from P.K Ramchandran.  It weighs around 600 kg and costs more than Rs. 25,000.  “Such lamps are common in all South Indian traditional temples”, said P. Madhvan Nair, President, Shree Ayyappa Seva Samiti.

Further gaiety spread when special devotional songs and stories related to the birth of Lord Ayyappa were recited by the people of the community.  This is expected to continue till late night today followed by a community dinner.

Vijay Kumar, Vice President said, “The Lord’s birthday is celebrated all across the country in all the Ayyappa Temples”.

He added, “In Udaipur, the Temple committee organized a program after Deeparadhana known as ‘Ayyappa Charitham Villupattu’ which includes story telling and reciting devotional songs about ‘Manikanthan’ (Ayyappan), with a decorated bow as a main theme.'”
