Udaipur joined the rest of the world today in commemorating the World Breastfeeding Week which will be marked from Aug 1 – Aug 8.

In the coming week, a series of programs including health seminars, workshops and health camps will be held to educate and create awareness among people about the importance of breastfeeding. Senior Pediatrician and social worker Dr. Devendra Sareen said that there will be consequent programs scheduled for the whole week; many NGOs and other health organizations are also taking part in making the World Breastfeeding Week successful. “School girls today will grow up tomorrow and play the vital role of a mother. We want them to be educated and be aware about the major health function delivered by breast feeding”, says Dr. Sareen. He also said that “many health complications and illness can be prevented if a mother properly breast feeds her child.” Dr. Mohammad Asif, Pediatrician presented a schedule of programs to be held during the week long event.  The programs include Essay Writing and Slogan Competition among the other Seminars including a Workshop at the Post Natal Ward and training of ANM. “We will also conduct a session at Satellite Hospital, Hiran Magri on Monday, August 6 and a felicitation ceremony on Tuesday, August 7,” said Dr. Asif. World Breastfeeding Week 2012 is dedicated to the mothers of new born babies to provide them essential nutrients through mother’s milk. Started in Aug 1990, World Breastfeeding Week is jointly initiated by WHO and UNICEF to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The event will be held in 170 countries across the world.
