Story of sacrifice to save trees to be told in France – Save environment

In the 18th century, 363 people fought for and gave their lives to save the trees in Khejadli village near Jodhpur. Maharaja Abhay Singh ruled Marwar during this time. For the construction of a royal room in the fort, Maharaja ordered his minister to arrange for wood for which the minister sent his fleet to cut down the khejdi trees.

Amrita Bishnoi opposed this felling of trees saying she tied rakhi to the khejdi tree. She refused to let the fleet cut the tree and wrapped her arms around it. She also said that the tree could be cut only after she has been cut down to pieces. The fleet killed Amrita with the axe they had brought with them to cut the trees. Seeing this, her three daughters also sacrificed their lives in attempt to save the trees. This way the whole Bishnoi community hugged the trees to prevent them from being destroyed and gave their lives. Among these were 71 women, too.
