Swiggy’s year-end report says biryani was ordered 83 million times; chicken burger was the most popular late-night order while chicken rolls and chicken momos were most popular snacks between Jan 1 to Nov 22
Udaipur, December 26, 2024 – Biryani has continued to be the most ordered dish in the country in 2024. This is for the ninth consecutive year that biryani has remained the top favourite of consumers. This finding is based on data compiled by online food delivery service provider Swiggy which studied order patterns this year from January 1 to November 22, in India.
The numbers show that 158 biryanis were ordered every minute, which means two plates of biryanis per second. Therefore, biryani topped the list with 83 million orders. Biryani was also one of the most ordered dishes on trains this year. Swiggy, in collaboration with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), delivers orders at designated stations along train routes.

Additionally, an intriguing trend shows that there were 2.8 million first-time users who opted straight for biryani. Also, approximately six million plates of biryani were ordered during Ramadan this year in India.
Data shows that chicken burgers were the second most preferred dish after biryani during late-night hours. Between 12 midnight and 02:00 am, 1.84 million chicken burgers were ordered.
However, as per late-night orders go, the most unusual one was by a Delhi consumer who once ordered 250 onion pizzas in a single go.
Second on the list of most ordered food is masala dosa which ranked second with 23 million orders. Swiggy data shows that in particular 8.5 million dosas and 7.8 million idlis were delivered for breakfast. Bengaluru remained the leader in masala dosa consumption, with 2.5 million orders placed.
In Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata, chhole, aloo paratha and kachori respectively were the most ordered dishes.
Among desserts, choco lava cake and chocolate truffle cake were the most popular.
One customer in Bengaluru stands out for having spent Rs 49,900 on pasta this year with nearly 55 Alfredo dishes, 40 Mac & Cheese plates and 30 spaghetti servings.
As far as snacks go, chicken rolls topped the list with 2.48 million orders, followed by chicken momos (1.63 million) and potato fries (1.3 million).
Data also show that dinner orders were more popular, about 29% higher than lunch.
