Consumers have a right to check the eatables well before buying. In a meeting of Public Distribution System, the Vigilance Committee stressed on the importance of alertness of consumers. The committee said a consumer has the right to check the quality, quantity and validity of the food product. The committee said that if the consumer takes great care and is observant enough to buy products after examining these points, he cannot be cheated. District Logistics officer Jagmohan said that consumers should not buy unsealed packets of food itmes. Labels of branded items also should be carefully read.
A label on food item should bear details of manufacturing, packing date, weight of the product and price. Manish Bhatnagar, Assistant Controller, Weights and Measurement department, advised to buy food products after proper measurements. Consumers should also check the weighing machine.
Salumber Pradhan Phool Chand Meena said that consumers do not pay attention to the expiry dates on medicines. Many chemists take advantage of this situation and give away medicines with expiry dates to the customers. Food safety officer Anil Bharadwaj said that this year 66 samples of food items were taken for investigation.
