The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed food companies to eliminate the '100% fruit juice' claim from both packaging and advertising. This move comes after a detailed review of the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, which revealed no provisions for making such a claim.

In its statement, FSSAI emphasized that labeling a product as "100% juice" is inaccurate according to the current regulations. Additionally, Indian law requires the term "reconstituted" to be included in the ingredient list when the juice contains added water, highlighting that the actual fruit content is often lower.

Moreover, any juice product with added sweeteners exceeding 15 grams per kilogram must be labeled as "sweetened juice."

Companies are permitted to use their existing packaging materials until September 1, 2024. However, they must immediately update labels on new production to comply with these revised regulations.
