Do you remember when the question over food "आज क्या खाएं" used to bring out an irritated reply from the grandmothers in the household "भाटे खा ले" meaning 'eat stones'?? This response actually comes out in our minds these days as the raw material has gone extremely expensive.
It began with the unseasonal rains damaging the crops which resulted in price hike of crops. Our kitchen supplies have become an unaffordable task these days. The prices of pulses rose to a great extent and the rates of onion made the masses cry. There was a great impact on the rates of pulses which are again an important part of our diet. Now the impact can be seen on the vegetables, too.
It has been long since the price graph of vegetables started rising and there seems to be no drop in this as of now. The retail prices are creating a heavy dent on the pocket. There are certain veggies which are available at 100 to 80 rupees a kg. Some are at 60 rupees a kg.
Since local farmers suffered losses due to rains, the prices of vegetables coming from other places have shot up. There are possibilites that next month onwards, there will be a drop down in the prices but nothing is definite. Masses are praying that the load on the pocket be reduced through some miracle. If this does not happen, what are we going to eat? Stones??
