An Air India first officer dies of a heart attack during a layover raising concerns about hidden cardiac risks among aviation professionals despite medical clearances
April 30, 2026 – In a tragic incident which has flagged concerns about hidden cardiac risks in aviation professionals even after routine medical screenings, an Air India pilot on Wednesday (April 29) died in Bali after suffering a heart attack during a layover.
The pilot, a first officer around 40 years old, had operated a flight from Delhi to Bali (in Indonesia) on Tuesday and was on scheduled crew rest at a Bali hotel when he began feeling severe discomfort. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, where doctors confirmed a heart attack. However, he could not be revived.
"Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he could not be saved," a statement issued by the airline said.
According to an Air India official, the pilot held a valid Class I medical certification and had cleared all mandatory medical tests recently. He was not known to have a history of heart disease or serious health issues. The airline also clarified that the pilot was within the DGCA-specified flying hour limits.
