Udaipur Delays in Kidney Transplant ICU Facility

Leaves patients in limbo

Administrative delays at RNT Medical College have delayed the launch of much-needed kidney transplant facilities, leaving patients in Udaipur and surrounding districts in a challenging situation.

Administrative preparations for kidney transplants at RNT Medical College have been ongoing, but the wait for transplants remains inevitable due to the current circumstances. Despite setting up a dedicated transplant ICU ahead of the transplant unit, the initiative has yet to take off even after six months of decision-making.

The lack of kidney transplant surgeries locally has forced over 4,000 patients in the region, including those in Udaipur, to rely solely on dialysis for survival. While approximately one thousand patients are advised by doctors to undergo kidney transplant surgery, the absence of such facilities locally and the shortage of organ donors result in only a fraction of them being able to undergo the procedure, often travelling to states like Gujarat and Maharashtra for treatment, incurring significant expenses.

Patients from Udaipur have been forced to travel to cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Mumbai for kidney transplants, underscoring the urgent need to start transplant services locally. With patients from neighbouring districts also in need, the delay is exacerbating their plight.

RNT Medical College has been gearing up for this project for the past two years. However, despite decisions made in administrative meetings, the construction of the transplant ICU by the PWD has experienced significant delays.
