Indore Water Contamination: 20 New Diarrhoea Cases

NIRBI investigates as 142 patients remain hospitalised, including 11 in ICU

 |

Jan 5, 2026 – Twenty new diarrhoea cases have been detected in Indore’s Bhagirathpura following the deaths of at least 10 people from drinking contaminated water. The new cases came to light during an ongoing screening in the area. Official reports say that 142 people are currently in hospital undergoing treatment with 11 of them in intensive care units (ICUs).

A team from Kolkata’s National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (NIRBI) is currently in the city investigating the crisis.

Readers may recall that a major water contamination incident in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area of Madhya Pradesh has caused several deaths and affected more than 2,800 people with many having to be hospitalised. The crisis occurred after bacteria-contaminated water was supplied in the municipal drinking water taps leading to an outbreak of diarrhoea

Meanwhile, Rajendra Singh, well-known water conservationist who is referred to as the "Waterman of India", has described the issue as a "system-created disaster," and blamed deep-rooted corruption for the crisis.

"If such a tragedy can occur in the country's cleanest city, it shows how serious the condition of drinking water supply systems must be in other cities," he told reporters.

Indore has consistently been ranked as the “cleanest city” in India.
