Govt Plans Nationwide Free Vaccine Drive Against Cervical Cancer for Girls
A new government initiative targets girls aged 14 and above with the Gardasil 4 vaccine, protecting against HPV strains 6, 11, 16, and 18—major causes of cervical cancer
Feb 24, 2026 - The Union Government of India is preparing to soon launch a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) free vaccination drive aimed at preventing cervical cancer, one of the most common and preventable cancers among women.
The campaign, likely to be initiated across the country in the coming weeks, falls under broader women’s health initiatives and is expected to significantly reduce cervical cancer cases.
The initiative is set to target girls aged 14 and above, providing the Gardasil vaccine which protects against the HPV strains most commonly linked to cervical cancer. Gardasil 4 protects against four HPV strains—6, 11, 16 and 18.
Official reports confirm the programme will provide the HPV vaccine free of cost at designated government health facilities, including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, district hospitals and government medical colleges. According to reports, the vaccine cost in the market is around Rs 4,000 per dose.
The nationwide rollout is voluntary but designed to ensure equitable access regardless of socioeconomic status, as per sources. The government’s planned free drive, under the Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan, represents one of the major public-health investments in preventive cancer care to date.
