Breakthrough Remote Robotic Telesurgery in Udaipur
Shantiraj Hospital, Udaipur, achieves a medical milestone as an Indore-based surgeon remotely performs two complex bariatric surgeries 500 km away using the SSI Mantra Robotic Telesurgery System
Udaipur, Nov 28, 2025 - Udaipur’s Shantiraj Hospital has achieved a remarkable milestone by performing complex surgeries using cutting-edge technology. A surgeon from Indore remotely controlled a robot from 500 kms away and successfully performed two complex bariatric surgeries in the hospital’s operation theatre located in Udaipur.
This milestone was achieved using advanced SSI Mantra Robotic Telesurgery System. The surgeries were performed jointly by renowned bariatric surgeon Dr Mohit Bhandari from Indore and Udaipur’s experienced surgeon Dr Sapan Ashok Jain. Dr Bhandari controlled the robot remotely from Indore.
According to Dr Jain, this technology makes complex surgeries safer, more precise, less painful and faster. It is a boon for regions where the availability of super specialists is limited.
The first patient was a 39-year-old man from Ahmedabad weighing 166 kg, and the second patient was a woman from Udaipur weighing 110 kg. Both had been struggling with obesity, diabetes, and other severe health issues for several years. When diet and exercise failed to provide relief, bariatric surgery was recommended. Both patients were admitted to the hospital, and the surgeries were successfully performed on November 24. They were discharged on November 26.
