The rising mercury in the Marwar region of Rajasthan is having a serious impact on infants, with dehydration leading to severe health complications. A recent study by SN Medical College, AIIMS Bhatinda, and Aston University, UK, highlights the risks posed by extreme heat to infants' kidneys and brains.
According to the research, only 2 to 3 infants in every 100 worldwide are at risk of developing blood clots in the brain. However, in western Rajasthan, approximately 16 infants per 100 are facing this life-threatening issue due to excessive heat and dehydration.
The study also reveals that dehydration is causing kidney damage in many infants. Hospitals are seeing an increase in cases of kidney malfunction and related complications.
The research included 74 infants suffering from kidney issues and cerebral diseases, such as epilepsy, irritability, and dormancy. The report warns that without proper diagnosis and treatment, affected infants may face long-term consequences like speech delay, intellectual disabilities, and epilepsy symptoms until the age of five.
