In a major step towards providing care for cancer patients, MB Hospital has installed the Bhabhatron II digital cobalt machine in its Cancer department. With the installation of this machine, cancer patients will no longer have to go to Jodhpur to get their treatments.

Machine has been installed at a cost of Rs 4 Cr. The machine carries an interlock facility that ensures that there is no scope for manual errors. Radiotherapy Simulator helps in identifying the organs at risk and in localizing the cancer-affected tissues. Simulator would also help in choosing the right radiation beam and aiming it at the target.

Dr Narendra Singh Rathore, HOD, Cancer department said that the machine is capable of adjusting to various shapes of tumours and working accordingly. The machine takes about 13sec for delivering radiation per patient and this is 8 times less than the older machine. Dr Rathore also informed that roughly 70 percent of cancer patients have to be given radiation and hence having this machine would be a huge boost.

This machine was developed indigenously by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
