Technology in Medicine has permitted complicated matters to be solved easily and one example of this kind is Spine Replacement.

A one of its kind unique case came into light at the Pacific Medical College and Hospital, Udaipur. In a complicated surgery performed by Consultant Ortho Surgeon, Dr. Saleh Mohammad Kagzi, a 60 year old man got relief from an over two year old problem related to inflammation in the Cervical Spine (Bone of the Neck).

As per Dr. Saleh, the patient, Bhuralal was suffering from severe neck pain, and overall weakness in the body, rendering him unable to function properly and not being able to pass Urine properly. This surgery is unique and performed in very few Medical Institutions both in India and abroad.

After much deliberation and tests, the diagnosis stated that the problem lay in the Cervical Spine and prolapsed discs at multiple levels. Due to severe thickening of the Vertebrae, the main nerve of the body was compressed due to the pressure. This disturbance in the nerve function led to weakness and misery.

After Surgery was planned, special instruments and implants were imported and a 5 hour surgery was performed. Cervical Spine 4 & 5 and Disc at Level 3,4 and 5 were removed and replaced by an artificial spine in the form of a Titanium cage and Metallic Plates. This released the pressure from the nerve, resulting in enhanced body power, normal movement and zero pain. Bhuralal is now able to perform his daily routine life activities like walking, sitting, toilet, etc. He is also able to feel the sensations in his hands and feet, which had been lost completely.

According to Dr Saleh this surgery is costly and requires specialization. However, it is being performed free of cost in the Pacific Hospital and is conducted by a special team of surgeons. What makes this surgery important is that if it is NOT treated timely, the patient becomes Paralysed and develops bed sores and infections in the Chest, Kidney and Urinary Bladder. This results in improper food intake, low hygiene thus causes pain and death.
