RNT Medical College in Udaipur is set to unveil a pioneering initiative aimed at tackling sickle cell disease (SCD) with the establishment of a specialized 'Sickle Cell Wellness Hub.' This groundbreaking project seeks to address the pressing needs of the tribal communities in the region, where SCD is notably prevalent.
Recent screenings conducted by the medical college have revealed a concerning prevalence of SCD among infants. Out of 23,107 babies tested, 430 were found to be positive for the disease, marking a positivity rate of 1.9%. This high incidence underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions and comprehensive care.
What is Sickle Cell Disease?
Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells. Instead of being round, the cells become shaped like sickles (or crescents). These sickle-shaped cells break down too early, leading to a shortage of healthy red blood cells, known as sickle cell anemia. The sickle cells can also block blood flow, causing pain, which is called a sickle cell crisis.
Symptoms of sickle cell disease include infections, pain, and fatigue. Treatments usually involve medications, blood transfusions, and in some cases, a bone marrow transplant.
The new wellness hub will serve as a cornerstone in the fight against SCD by focusing on several critical areas
The new project at RNT Medical College is set to greatly improve how sickle cell disease is managed in the area. It will offer a complete care model to help people with the condition and aims to make a big difference in their lives, while also supporting the wider fight against sickle cell disease.
