Dengue has emerged as a serious health issue in Udaipur, impacting many residents. Reports indicate that every third person with a fever is testing positive for dengue. This surge has led to a rise in deaths; however, government statistics claim there have been zero fatalities attributed to dengue.
The Medical and Health Department acknowledges the outbreak but attributes deaths to other illnesses, downplaying dengue's role. Medical officials explain that severe fever during dengue can lead to fatalities from heart attacks and brain hemorrhages. They note that confirmation of dengue-related deaths requires testing, which families often do not pursue after a death occurs.
Udaipur Dengue Cases
Udaipur has reported the second-highest number of dengue cases in Rajasthan, following Jaipur. The state has seen around 2,500 dengue cases, with 717 confirmed in Udaipur. Of these, 382 patients are from urban areas and 335 from rural regions. Affected patients are being treated at various hospitals, including RNT and MB hospitals.
Despite ongoing treatments and several reported deaths, the government continues to classify these fatalities as caused by new diseases following dengue. The Medical Department indicates that the highest concentration of patients is in Jagdish Chowk, where health officials are conducting door-to-door checks.
In response to the outbreak, Dr. Indrajeet Singh, the state-level in-charge, visited Udaipur and held discussions with hospital and department heads. He inspected patient conditions at the Satellite Hospital and later met with health officials at the Urban Primary Health Center. Dr. Singh emphasized the need for daily inspections and monitoring of dengue patients. He also urged for source reduction and anti-larvae measures in residential areas.
To combat the outbreak, the Medical Department has implemented daily reporting via the Marudhara app. Nodal officers are verifying affected areas, while DBC, ASHA, and ANM workers are conducting anti-larvae activities around the homes of positive cases. They are spraying pyrethrum and temephos, and destroying larvae.
Municipal Corporation Fogging Across Udaipur Areas
The Municipal Corporation has resumed fogging across all 70 wards of the city to combat mosquito-borne diseases. Additionally, a new initiative has been launched to prevent mosquito breeding by applying MLO (larvicides) to stagnant water.
Municipal Commissioner Ram Prakash announced that the first phase of fogging had already been conducted in the city's wards. To ensure complete prevention of mosquito-borne diseases, the second phase of fogging has now been initiated. On Monday, fogging operations were carried out in Bhupalpura, Sardarapura, Maharana Bhopal Hospital, Ashok Nagar, and Reger Colony using two vehicles. The second vehicle targeted areas including Chitrakoot Nagar, Fatehpura, Neemch Kheda, Sector 3, Sukhadia Basti, and Seva Ashram, with the goal of effectively controlling mosquito populations. This second phase was launched based on a list provided by the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO).
Commissioner Ram Prakash further clarified that the fogging operations were resumed following the CMHO's recommendations. The health department has issued a separate list of high-sensitivity areas that are receiving special attention during the fogging efforts.
