Well known writer Chetan Bhagat has been accused of plagiarism by a Bengaluru author who has filed a lawsuit to restrain the sale of Bhagat’s novel “One Indian Girl”.
Anvita Bajpai has asked for damages worth 1 lakh rupees and based on her lawsuit, the court has restricted the sale of Bhagat’s novel temporarily. Anvita reported that she had written a book “Life, Odds and Ends” and had gifted a copy to Bhagat in 2014. She said that “characters, places and emotional flow” have been plagiarised from her book.
Bhagat has denied the charges saying that his stories are always original and he hasn’t even read any book by Anvita. He says that there is some misunderstanding and the legal publishing team will be taking further actions on the accusations. His publisher had denied commenting on this issue.
Anvita even shared the court order on her Face book page stating the plagiarism issue. She is an IIT and IIM graduate and holds passion for writing. She also said that she had met Bhagat in a Lit Fest in Bengaluru in 2014 and Bhagat’s novel “One Indian Girl” came out in 2016. Anvita had served a legal notice to Bhagat on this matter which was denied by him as result of which she approached the court.
