The Clock Tower at Ghantaghar area is finally getting repaired, after more than two years since the clock was broken amid administration’s negligence. The initiative is not taken by any government organization but the local businessmen of the area came up to preserve this heritage building constructed in 1888.

The Clock Tower at Ghantaghar area is finally getting repaired, after more than two years since the clock was broken amid administration’s negligence. The initiative is not taken by any government organization but the local businessmen of the area came up to preserve this heritage building constructed in 1888.

The first echo was heard today, when the clock repairers started the clock, however it will take few more days, for this mechanical clock to get fully functional.

More than 400 sarafa businessmen of the area comprised of Ghantaghar, Bada bazaar and Moti Chohatta decided to take the responsibility of clock tower in their hands, and appointed three clock mechanics Zaheeruddin Sakka, Babu Khan and Saleem Mohammad to repair the clock.

Clock Tower at Ghantaghar to start again after 2 Years“We wrote to every concerned administrative department to take care of clock tower, but they never reacted positively, finally we decided to take this work in our own hands”, said Inder Singh Mehta, President of Udaipur Sarafa Association.

Not just the clock, but the whole tower needs to be renovated; the top floor of the tower thickly layered with garbage and dust.

Clock Tower literally became a hopping ball between UIT and UMC, finally the condition turned worst and the 154 year old clock stopped ticking from last 2 years.

Zaheeruddin Sakka, the clock mechanic said, “the brushing parts of the clock are completely razed; now such parts are also not available in the market, so we have to make it by our self”. Sakka said that it will take 5-6 days to restart the clock.

There are three such clock towers in the town, the one at Ghanta Ghar is the oldest among the other two at Surajpol and Badi.
