Hawkers Association of Udaipur protested in front of collectorate and rallied around city to express their anger over forcibly evacuating them by civic authority. The protest came after UMC and other departments initiated special drive to remove street hawkers from road side.

Supported by Marxwadi Communist Party, the vendors protested outside collectorate and demanded to get permission to do their businesses on streets. They also demanded to get license as per the promise made by UMC.

The issue became more divisive as on one side administration is trying to make the city ‘Clean and Encroachment Free’ while on other side street vendors who are forcibly evacuated are losing their business.

Meanwhile, the street vendors defend themselves through orders of court which says that street hawker/vendor should not be removed forcefully, and if removed they should be assigned a specific place to continue their business. The order was passed by Supreme Court on 13 Sept 2013.

Rajesh Singhvi, leader of communist party said, “By removing the street hawkers forcefully, the administration itself is breaking the law; it is violation to the orders of court.”

After discussing the matter with district collector, the group reached UMC and met UMC Commissioner.

The administrative officers assured all hawkers to resolve their issues soon but also appealed them to support the administration in their mission to make the city clean and beautiful.
