Rail administration penalised for broken seat

A passenger was forced to sit on broken seat in Holiday Express train operating on Ajmer-Udaipur route. Based on his complaint, State Consumer Forum has penalised railways with 24000 rupees.

Abhishek Bhansali resident of Bedla road had booked his train ticket via online reservation system in 2014. As per the booking, he travelled from Ajmer to Udaipur in AC chair car. He had seat number 66 in AC chair car from Ajmer to Udaipur in Holiday Express. It was winter season hence the coach was packed with passengers. The seat that Abhishek got was broken and also tilted to a side. He was very uncomfortable on that seat hence he made a complaint about this with the TTE in train. Reportedly the TTE ignored his discomfort. Abhishek asked for the complaint register which was not provided. Once again the TTE displayed an irresponsible attitude towards this and told Abhishek to get down at some station and lodge his complaint. Since the seat was not at all comfortable, Abhishek was forced to stand throughout the journey.

Abhishek then registered a complaint with District Consumer Forum. Penalty raised by District Consumer Forum towards railways was 4000 rupees against which Abhishek appealed in the State Consumer Forum. State Consumer Forum looked into the sensitivity of the issue and directed North Western Railways to pay a total amount of 24000 rupees as penalty.
