Seems like the society, government and the administration of Udaipur have blindfolded themselves to avoid looking at the dreadful condition of centuries old Gangu Kund, located near Ayad River Udaipur, which is full of filth and pollution leading to death of thousands of fishes every day.

This case was revealed a few days back when an elite visitor found dead fishes floating over the surface of water body. Local group responsible for the maintenance of the place informed administration for their helping hand, but they were not entertained with a reply, “property does not fall under our responsibility”. Cleaning of Kund for past one year is being carried out by Gangu Kund Vikas Samiti.

Tika Ram, Head Priest says, “Samiti had brought the matter in the knowledge of Commissioner of Municipal Council and Divisional Commissioner. They had also informed Archaeological Department”.

Despite of their efforts of pumping out polluted water using jet, no major change could be seen in water ecology. Moreover, due to death of such a huge number of fishes, the surrounding is full of smell and a likely spread of epidemic in and around the area is feared.

Members of the Gangu Kund Samiti believe that the major reason behind this tragedy is polluted water, as construction of sewerage canal passing from back side of the Kund has blocked automatic exit channels which are affecting proper rotation of water in the pond.

Urban Improvement Trust and Municipal Council are preparing Master Plan to make the city ideal for their visitors and tourists, but at the same time, they are not considering some of the most precious heritages being built by our ancestors. Soon, a lot of monitory grants will be pumped in the name of development after the Municipal Council gets Corporation status, but what is the use of the additional finances when the least has been spent on development of the city.
