July 1, 2025 - Teghbir Singh, a six-year-old boy from Ropar, Punjab, has created a world record by being the youngest ever to successfully scale Mount Elbrus in Russia.
Teghbir, accompanied by his father Sukhinderdeep Singh, began his ascent on June 20 and treked up to the summit hoisting the Indian tricolour there on June 28. All of six years and nine months, Teghbir has become the youngest mountaineer in the world to climb Mount Elbrus.
Mt Elbrus is the highest peak of the European continent and stands at an altitude of 18,510 feet (5,642 metres). It was a low-oxygen trek with average temperature in the region usually staying between zero to minus 10 degrees Celsius.
With this climb, Teghbir has broken the record of Kushagra from Maharashtra who had climbed Mount Elbrus in 2024 at the age of seven years and three months.
Teghbir is also the youngest Asian to scale Mt Kilimanjaro (the highest peak of the African continent) in August 2024 and his name features in the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records. Additionally, he reached the Mt Everest Base Camp in Nepal in April last year.
Teghbir was honoured with the Mountain Climbing Certificate issued by Mountaineering, Rock Climbing and Sports Tourism Federation of Kabardino – Balkarian Republik (Russia).
“I was walking first time on snow. My shoes were heavy but I had practised it,” said the elated youngster who is a Grade 2 student of Shiwalik Public School, Ropar.
His father shared, “Our stays were in mountain huts and it took eight days to scale the summit. Due to bad weather and a fierce snowstorm, the summit push was cancelled twice.”
