While having a glance at these beautifully carved and crafted earrings and necklaces, it would be bit hard for you to believe that these are handmade paper ornaments made by an 11-year-old budding artist.

Mehnaz Husain, student of St Mary’s School, Udaipur is a wonderful painter and budding artist. She is currently working on mastering the art of Quilling which requires perfection, imagination and creativity of the artist.

Painting since age-3 Mehnaz has made number of artwork and took part in dozens of competitions from local to state level. She grabbed her first prize in drawing at the age of three and since then her room is beset with mementos and prizes.

Seeing her extra ordinary talent and creativity, she was recently invited to teach the art of quilling to the students of college, who are just twice the age of Mehnaz.

“Quilling requires passion and patience, it is a typical art where color papers are cut into tiny pieces, swirl, turn, roll and stick with glue to make a desired form” she said.

Mehnaz has made several pairs of earrings, miniature cup-n-saucer, necklaces with beautifully embedded colourful paper, appeared like precious pearls and expensive stone ornaments.

Daughter of Dr. Aejaz Husain, a homeopathy consultant and Dr. Zehra, lecturer in a Vidya Bhawan college of Udaipur, Mehnaz has inborn skills of art. Her passion was further escalated with the support of her parents, specially her grandfather Yaqub Zaheer who encouraged Mehnaz to keep growing her passion to the level of perfection.

The proficiency in quilling was gained with help of Internet, from where she bought inspiration and excellence.

Her biggest achievement till date is when she was invited to teach quilling to the students of Arts at Meera Girl’s College. Perhaps she would be the youngest art instructor invited to any college in Udaipur.

Not just painting and quilling, Mehnaz is also master in the art of calligraphy and won several prizes in the competitions.

Mehnaz said, “I am now learning basics of Canvas painting and will work on my master piece soon”.
