Govt Plans Colour Codes for Antibiotic Packaging

The government hopes this step will help curb the excessive and incorrect use of antibiotics

Jan 8, 2026 - The Central Government proposes to introduce special coding, colour indicators or clear markings on antibiotic medicine packaging so that both patients and pharmacists can immediately understand the category of the medicine. With a separate coloured strip or box, warning signs or symbols on the packaging, antibiotics will be easily identifiable.

The government hopes this step will help curb the excessive and incorrect use of antibiotics.

For this, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has been asked to issue detailed guidelines. The Central Government has also asked the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to prepare simple, easy-to-understand messages for the general public.

A senior official from the Union Health Ministry said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed concern over the rising use of antibiotics. He emphasised that antibiotics should be taken only on a doctor’s advice and that unnecessary use must be avoided.
