Dangal the biopic drama of India’s medal winning lady wrestler Geeta Phogat became the first Indian film to reach a global milestone, that of being a member of the $300 million club.
After its phenomenal success in India, the movie was released in Chinese and achieved unprecedented appreciation in China. It achieved a record $5 Million in its 6th China weekend and reached $300 million worldwide, becoming the 5th non-English movie to do so internationally.
The other non-English movies that have made it to the lofty $300 million worldwide box office mark, viz. China’s The Mermaid and Monster Hunt, France’s The Intouchables, and Japan’s Your Name. There are still three weeks to go before the China distribution license expires and the movie is pulled out from theaters in China.
PK, another Aamir Khan film,had earlier collected $124 million worldwide and Dangal exceeds that by 2.5 times. This has put Aamir Khan on course to become India’s first billion dollar grossing phenomena.
