SC Moves Plea Against 'Udaipur Files' Release to Delhi High Court
July 25, 2025 – The Supreme Court today asked the Delhi High Court to hear petitions challenging release of the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder following the Centre’s nod to the film with six cuts.
A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi issued this ruling asking petitioners Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani and Mohd Javed (accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case), to move the High Court against the Centre's decision. The Bench requested the High Court to take up the matter on Monday, July 28, 2025.
On the issue whether the film’s release should stay banned until the Delhi High Court hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioners, said if the film was allowed to be released then the matter would become infructuous.
The Apex Court said all contentions may be raised before the High Court, which shall decide in accordance with law and that the Court be requested to hear the matter on Monday.
The film is based on the murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur in June 28, 2022.
