Addressing a long pending issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced 27% reservation for candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10% reservation for candidates from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) under the All India Quota Scheme.

“The present government is committed to providing due reservation both to the backward category as well as the EWS category. The Union government has now taken a historic decision to provide for 27 per cent reservation for OBCs and 10 per cent reservation for EWS in the AIQ scheme,"Health Ministry statement.

This reservation will be applicable for MBBS, BDS, MS, MD, MDS and Diploma Medical courses from the current academic year. The directions to facilitate this were given to the concerned Union Ministers earlier on Monday to facilitate an effective solution, as per sources from the Health Ministry.

The statement further said that this decision will benefit nearly 1,500 OBC students in MBBS, 2,500 OBC students in PG courses, nearly 550 EWS students in MBBS and nearly 1,000 EWS students in post-graduation.

Being a central scheme, the Central List of OBCs shall be used for this reservation. Students from OBS and EWS sections from across India will benefit under the All India Quota scheme for seats in any state.
