Afghan Earthquake: Death Toll Mounts to Over 1,400
September 2, 2025 - The death toll in Sunday’s earthquake in Afghanistan has gone up to at least 1,411, according to official figures given by the government. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake which hit the eastern part of the country on August 31 has caused widespread destruction levelling out several villages. More than 3,000 people are said to be injured.
"Rescue operations are still underway in all the affected areas today," said deputy government spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat. "Dozens of commandos have been airlifted to areas where planes could not land to pull out the injured from the rubble and transport them to a suitable location."
The earthquake, which occurred close to the Pakistan border with its epicentre about 17 miles east of Jalalabad, caused strong aftershocks in Kabul. There were reported to be at least five aftershocks with the strongest of magnitude 5.2, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGC).
Meanwhile, the government has called out for international help even as local officials are struggling with heavy rains, landslides and inadequate access to the affected areas.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolence on X writing “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.”
