400 Killed in Strike on Kabul Hospital; Afghanistan Accuses Pakistan of Attack
More than 400 people are killed in an alleged Pakistan airstrike on a Kabul drug rehab centre; Pakistan denies targeting civilians; rising tensions signal a major regional crisis
March 17, 2026 - In what is being described as one of the deadliest incidents in the current Pakistan-Afghanistan clash, more than 400 people were reported killed in an alleged Pakistan airstrike on March 16 on a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, as claimed by Afghan authorities. Pakistan has denied targeting civilians, saying it only “precisely targeted military installations and terrorist support infrastructure” in Kabul and the province of Nangahar. It dismissed the claim as “false and aimed at misleading public opinion”.
Afghan government spokesperson Suhail Shaheen has called the deadly airstrike on the hospital a "crime against humanity" and issued a warning that Pakistan would get a "response in their language". More than 250 people were said to be injured in the attack.
Fighting between Pakistan and Afghanistan has intensified since late February 2026. Both sides accuse each other of supporting militant groups and launching cross-border attacks. Pakistan claims Afghan territory shelters groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) while Afghanistan denies it.
Pakistan has carried out multiple airstrikes in Afghan cities like Kabul and Kandahar in recent weeks saying says it is responding to attacks and drones launched from Afghan side. Afghanistan says civilians (including women and children) have been killed.
This conflict is being called the most serious Pakistan–Afghanistan clash in years. A previous ceasefire has collapsed and the situation risks turning into a wider regional crisis.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan cricket star Rashid Khan has strongly condemned the incident saying that attacks on innocent civillians and medical facilities cannot be justifed. In a social media message, he wrote, "The sheer disregard for human lives, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, is sickening and deeply concerning. It will only fuel division and hatred. I call upon the UN and other human rights agencies to thoroughly investigate this latest atrocity and hold the perpetrators to account.”
