Sewage flow into Udaipur lakes raises concerns among activists
Udaipur, January 20, 2025 - During an inspection near Ambamata community hall, lake activists observed a significant amount of sewage entering Udaipur's lakes. Despite claims by Udaipur Smart City to maintain sewage-free lakes, the problem continues unabated.
Dr. Anil Mehta, a lake expert from the Lake Conservation Committee, stated that ensuring safe sanitation and clean drinking water are critical responsibilities of the Smart City initiative. However, these public health needs remain unmet.
Tej Shankar Paliwal, a former member of the Lake Development Authority, pointed out that this issue has persisted for several months. Despite repeated complaints, authorities have not taken action.
Nand Kishore Sharma, Director of the Gandhi Manav Kalyan Samiti, warned that sewage, along with plastic waste, is harming the lake’s ecosystem and degrading drinking water quality.
Young environmentalist Kushal Rawal highlighted that sewage stagnation is contaminating groundwater. Stepwell water nearby is decaying, and borewell water is no longer safe for use.
Senior citizens Drupad Singh and Pallab Dutta have urged the Lake Development Authority Chairman and Udaipur District Collector to form a special task force for regular sewage system inspections and maintenance.
