January 27, 2025 – Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the world's largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, has cut the price of its one-litre Amul milk packs by Re 1. This reduction, across the country, is the first ever in decades. Earlier, in June 2024, Amul had increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre.

The main objective, says GCMMF, is to provide relief to consumers and boost milk consumption. According to Jayen Mehta, managing director of GCMMF, the reason behind this is to “encourage consumers to buy larger milk packets and get incentives for the same."

This could also lead to reduced plastic waste by promoting larger pack purchases.

The price has been reduced in four variants - Amul Gold, Amul Taaza, Amul T-Special and Amul Chai Mazza. The price of 500 ml pouch remains unchanged.

GCMMF has 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages of Gujarat and its 18 member unions procure 300 lakh litres of milk per day. It has a total annual milk processing capacity of around 500 lakh litres. During the last fiscal year, on an average the cooperative handled 310 lakh litres of milk per day.
