Saudi Arabia has taken unprecedented precautions to ensure a safe and comfortable Hajj for the pilgrims from around 100 countries
June 5, 2025 - The annual holy pilgrimage of Hajj has begun with an estimated 1.4 million pilgrims from around 100 countries performing the main pillar of Hajj - Waqf-e-Arafah - today, June 5. Braving the summer sun, the devouts have immersed themselves in the rituals so sacred for Muslims around the world. Arafat is the most important Hajj ritual and a symbol of the preview of the Day of Judgement.
Pilgrims began arriving in Mina from Mecca on June 4, 8th Dhul-Hijjah, to observe the Day of Tarwiyah thus marking the official start of Hajj. At night the process of transferring pilgrims from the Mina valley to Arafat for the ritual at Mount Arafat began. Today, the devouts will spend the day at Arafat and then leave before sunset after offering the Zuhr and Asr prayers. Arafat, which is about 15 kms from Mina, is where it is believed Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) delivered his final sermon.
From Arafat the pilgrims will head to Muzdalifah where they will offer Maghrib and Isha prayers before gathering pebbles for the symbolic stoning of the devil in Mina the next day.
Saudi Arabia has made unprecedented arrangements to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the pilgrims because of the scorching heat of peak summer. Pilgrims have been advised to maintain caution whenever they are out in direct sunlight. Advisories have been issued about avoiding going out at peak daytime unless if it is for rituals and to keep heads covered all the time when outdoors.
Extensive arrangements have been made in Arafat for medical emergencies, including a central hospital, dispensaries and mobile Red Cross units. Security, health, food and transportation systems have been fully activated to support the influx of pilgrims. More than 100,000 square metres of new shaded structures have been installed in Mina and Arafat. Around 350 misting fans and 320 canopies have been put up around Namira Mosque. More than 2,400 cold water dispensers have been placed along the route where the pilgrims will walk.
