Asbestosis Patients of Jhadol on Hunger Strike

Alleged Asbestosis victims from Jhadol, Udaipur are planning to go for a hunger strike as the last resort in order to get reports of the medical test performed last month. The National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH) has conducted tests on around 166 people from Jhadol and Devgarh.

 

Alleged Asbestosis victims from Jhadol, Udaipur are planning to go for a hunger strike as the last resort in order to get reports of the medical test performed last month. The National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH) has conducted tests on around 166 people from Jhadol and Devgarh. The doctors have conducted the tests and even published reports confirming Asbestosis on at least 95 persons. However in spite of all published research papers ready, the reports have not been handed over to the victims even after applying under RTI act.

They are preparing to go for the strike in front of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office from Wednesday. For this a group of 10 persons went to SDM’s office seeking permission for staging the strike. However, the officials demanded proof of the test being conducted on them by NIOH.

The MLPC (Mines Labor Protection Campaign) has been helping the victims to get their reports. They will be forwarding all necessary documents and medical reports by NIOH after which they can go on strike. (Source: TOI)

Asbestosis is caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers. It occurs due to high intensity and long term exposure to Asbestos. Asbestosis is the scarring of lung tissue. There are two types of fibers Amphibole: these are thin and straight and Serpentine: curved. The Amphibole fibers are responsible for human disease. It is a chronic disease and has no as such curative treatment. The first symptom of asbestosis is shortness of breath following any physical exercise. It is categorized by a dry cough and generalized feeling of illness. Respiratory infection and coughing of blood are also common. People with extensive occupational exposure to the mining, manufacturing, handling or removal of asbestos have a risk developing asbestosis.
