Apart from the Asiatic lion, a white tiger and one other lion have also been found infected with the virus.

All the above infected animals are in Nahargarh Biological Park in Lion Safari.

After the Asiatic lions in Hyderbad zoo and Uttar Pradesh zoo were found infected with corona virus, tests were performed in Jaipur zoo as well.

The reports revealed that one Asiatic lion, one white tiger and one other lion were found covid positive. All these 3 animals are at present in Nahargarh Biological Park in the lion Safari at Jaipur-Delhi highway.

The samples were sent to IVRI, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. The Joint Director of IVRI has confirmed that the lions and tiger have been found covid positive. On the other hand the Senior Wildlife Medical Officer Dr Arvind Mathur said that he hasn’t yet received any confirmation on the issue hence he cannot comment on it. The Asiatic lion is known by the name of Tripur.

With the infection spreading in animals, directives were issued to shut down all the sanctuaries across India. It was however pointed out that the lions were infected with the first version of covid and not the recent drastic strain as they had shown signs of flu, running nose and cough.
