Assembly Elections 2026: Assam, Kerala & Puducherry Polls Underway

Voting begins in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry Assembly elections 2026 with strong turnout, around 5.3 crore voters are participating in this high-stakes political contest

April 9, 2026 - Voting is currently underway in two States and one Union Territory - Assam (126 seats), Kerala (140 seats) and Puducherry (30 seats) in what is being seen as  high-stakes Assembly elections and a key political test ahead of future national contests.

Around 5.3 crore people are eligible to vote across the three regions in the single-phase elections. Thousands of voters have turned out already, with long queues reported at polling booths. Early morning voter turnout was steady. Turnout by 11:00 am — Assam 38.92%, Kerala 33.28%, Puducherry 37.06%. Participation is expected to rise as the day pans out.

In Assam, the BJP-led alliance is aiming for a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Congress, led by Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, is hoping to regain power in the State.

Kerala has a three-way contest with the Left Democratic Front, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, aiming to retain power.

In Puducherry there is a direct fight between the NDA and Opposition alliances, making it a tight race. In the fray are NDA, Congress-DMK bloc and actor Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam

Results will be announced on May 4, 2026, after voting in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu conclude later this month.
