Smart City Project Faces Challenges in Ayad River Beautification

Ayad River

Under the Smart City initiative, efforts are ongoing to enhance the Ayad River, a project costing Rs 75 crore. However, progress has been sluggish, raising concerns that the upcoming monsoon could derail the project. Within a 5 kilometer stretch, stone pitching remains incomplete. If the stone work isn't finished within 5 kms, the soil piles will wash into Udaisagar Lake with the first rain.

Development Stalled by Environmental Order

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stopped cement concrete work in the Ayad Riverbed. However, other activities are allowed with certain conditions. Right now, they are using synthetic mats filled with sand and soil to lay stones for water recharge. Tasks like finishing stone work, planting grass, and building walls are still unfinished.

Challenges and Controversy

Several stakeholders have voiced opposition, particularly against the stone work in the riverbed. Critics argue that the natural state of the river should have been preserved rather than altered. Meanwhile, officials have taken measures to penalize firms involved in the project for delays and compliance issues. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including concerns over water management and shortages of labourers.
