Balendra Shah Becomes Nepal’s Youngest Prime Minister at 35
Balendra Shah was sworn in as Nepal’s youngest Prime Minister at 35 after a landslide victory; the RSP leader took oath in Kathmandu, marking a historic political shift
March 27, 2026 – Balendra Shah is Nepal’s new Prime Minister. The 35-year-old rapper-turned-politician took oath of office on Friday (March 27) in Kathmandu after a landslide victory earlier this month becoming the first person from the Madhes region to become the 47th Prime Minister of the nation. He also is the youngest democratically elected PM of Nepal. He was sworn in by Nepal President Ram Chandra Poudel at a ceremony at the presidential palace in the national capital.
Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) won the elections held earlier this month bagging 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives (HoR). Shah defeated four-time Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli by a huge margin of about 50,000 votes in Jhapa-5 constituency following a Gen Z-led uprising in September that toppled the government. On Thursday, his party elected him as the Parliamentary leader of the RSP.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shah on being sworn in as the Nepal PM. “Your appointment reflects the trust reposed in your leadership by the people of Nepal. I look forward to working closely with you to take India-Nepal friendship and cooperation to even greater heights for the mutual benefit of our two peoples”, Modi poseid on X.
