Frequent accidents and traffic jams at the spot prompt authorities to take this decision; planning and budgeting likely to take 3-4 months
Udaipur, December 8, 2024 – Owing to frequent accidents on the Balicha crossroad, which connects Udaipur city to the Ahmedabad National Highway, the authorities have come up with a proposal to build an overbridge at this location. Initially, the plan had been to construct an underpass at the site but following the submission of a technical report, it was decided that an overbridge would be more suitable.
As per reports, Udaipur Urban Development Authority (UDA) Commissioner Rahul Jain and Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena visited the site to review the situation. After inspecting the location, Jain confirmed that a plan would be designed for the necessary infrastructure.
MLA Meena said that he has always been concerned about the chaotic condition of the intersection and had also raised the issue in the Legislative Assembly. Because of this concern, the UDA Commissioner had joined him in the inspection of the site and acted immediately ordering the removal of encroachments to free-up the area.
The current challenges at Balicha intersection are plenty. The traffic from Udaipur city towards Ahmedabad or IIM is always at risk of jams or accidents because of the highway. Also, when coming from Ahmedabad, vehicles often enter the city through a service road which has a lot of commercial activities going on thus, leading to obstructions and road mishaps. Additionally, for vehicles entering or exiting the southern expansion area from-and-to the city the risk is present because of the heavy vehicles on the service road and fast moving traffic on the highway.
Once the overbridge is constructed, vehicles traveling from Pratap Nagar to Geetanjali Hospital towards Ahmedabad and vice versa will be able to directly pass over the bridge. Vehicles entering and leaving Udaipur city will also move smoothly without having to stop or wait in traffic. Additionally, people traveling to and from the southern expansion area will benefit from improved access, without leading to traffic snarl-ups.
According to the UDA, budget for the construction will be finalised in the upcoming months. The planning and budgeting process will likely take three to four months before construction begins.
