Nov 21, 2025 – Kolkata and several parts of Northeast India were rocked by strong tremors on Friday morning after an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 jolted neighbouring Bangladesh. According to initial data, the quake struck near Bangladesh capital Dhaka at around 10:08 am hitting at a depth of 10 kms. There are, however, no reports of any casualties or damage.

Kolkata residents have described the tremors as powerful and lasting a few seconds. Many have called it scary as people rushed out of the building onto the streets. Social media was flooded with comments with one writing, " “Oh my god. This is the most terrifying earthquake I have ever felt, literally the whole building shook."

As per informed sources, shallow epicentre lead to stronger tremors because seismic waves have shorter distance to travel.

The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake’s epicentre was in the city of Narsingdi, about 40 km (25 miles) from Dhaka. Mild tremors were reported to have been felt in Agartala, Guwahati and Shillong.
