Dec 23, 2025 – Bangladesh government has suspended visa services at its High Commission in New Delhi and missions in Tripura and Siliguri citing “security situation” in the wake of mounting protests outside its diplomatic premises. This comes on the back of India closing down its visa application centres in Bangladesh indefinitely after its diplomatic offices in Khulna and Chittagong were targeted by mobs.
Anger against Bangladesh erupted in India after a 25-year-old Hindu man was lynched in Mymensingh last week over alleged blasphemy. Protestors, reportedly led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, carried out demonstrations outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday (December 23) morning amid tight security with troops from the police and the paramilitary deployed.
Bangladesh is currently rocked by violence and anti-India sentiments after the death of student leader and Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi on December 12 after he was shot by masked assailants. Rumours that the assailants had fled to India has led to mass anti-India protest in the country.
