The Kagdi River, flowing through the city and currently filled with garbage, is set to undergo a Venice-inspired transformation. After the recent budget announcement, Rs 81.7 crore has been allocated for this project, with the Mahi department already issuing tenders. Work has commenced to revamp the river.
Garbage Accumulation Due to Lack of Boundaries
The river has become heavily polluted, as it lacks proper boundaries and a concrete bed, leading to the accumulation of garbage. Local residents also continue to dump waste into the river, worsening its condition.
Plans for Pathways and Concrete Lining
The Mahi department plans to develop pathways on both sides of the river. Additionally, the river’s depth will be increased, and the bed will be lined with concrete. This will enhance the river’s water-carrying capacity and prevent further contamination.
Monsoon Safety Measures
To keep people safe during the monsoon, walls will be built on both sides of the river. This will stop residents from throwing garbage into the river and reduce the chances of accidents during heavy rain.
Impact on Water Flow and Disease Prevention
Prakash Chandra Regar, the Mahi Project Executive Engineer, said that making the river deeper and lining it with concrete will raise the water level and help remove silt that builds up during the monsoon. Right now, the dirty water is causing mosquitoes to breed, which can lead to diseases for people living nearby. To fix these problems, cleaning and cementing work is happening downstream of the Kagdi pickup weir.
