July 06, 2026: The investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur has gathered pace, with the police adding the charge of gang rape to the case. Along with murder, Section 70(2), which deals with gang rape under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), has now been invoked. So far, three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and investigators believe they are closing in on the main accused.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the region. Following the recovery of the minor's body, authorities assured the victim's family that the accused would be brought to justice and that the strictest action permitted under the law would be pursued.
Two of the arrested accused were produced before a local court on Monday. During the hearing, the police sought 14 days of custody, arguing that custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the full sequence of events and identify anyone else involved in the crime. The court accepted the plea and granted 14 days of police custody. The third accused is expected to be produced before the court on Tuesday.
According to investigators, the person arrested from Baruipur market on Monday afternoon, identified as Anand Sardar, is suspected to be the prime accused in the case. Police are currently questioning him to determine his exact role and whether additional individuals were involved in the crime.

Police intensify investigation as autopsy reveals disturbing details
The incident came to light on Sunday morning after the body of the minor girl was recovered from a pond in the Dhapadhapi area of Baruipur. The discovery sparked massive protests, with angry local residents alleging that the victim had been raped and murdered. Protesters placed the girl's body on the road and blocked railway tracks, demanding immediate arrests and swift justice for the victim.
Soon after the incident, police launched an extensive investigation. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the case. Acting on preliminary evidence, investigators first arrested Prabhas Mondal and later Dibakar Sardar. Their arrests were followed by the detention of Anand Sardar, who investigators now believe to be the main accused.
During Monday's court proceedings, the government lawyer described the case as highly sensitive and extremely serious. The prosecution argued that extended police custody was essential to reconstruct the sequence of events, collect additional evidence, and identify any other suspects linked to the crime. The court accepted these arguments and granted the investigating agency 14 days of custody for the two accused produced before it.
Notably, no lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing. Meanwhile, investigators have continued questioning Anand Sardar to establish the complete chain of events and determine whether more arrests are likely in the coming days.
