Death Penalty Sanjay Roy

Udaipur, January 21, 2025 - On January 18, 2025, the Sessions Court in Sealdah found Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025. However, the West Bengal government has now approached the Calcutta High Court seeking the death penalty for Roy.

The Sessions Court ruled that the case did not fall under the "rarest of rare" category, which would warrant capital punishment. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict. On her official 'X' handle, she criticized the decision and vowed to appeal to the High Court for stricter punishment.

In his judgment, Sessions Judge Anirban Das pointed out lapses in the police investigation and highlighted attempts by the hospital authorities to cover up the incident. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000/- on Sanjay Roy.

Additionally, the court directed the West Bengal government to provide Rs 17 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family. The case continues to draw public and political attention as the High Court prepares to review the appeal.
