A professor has been arrested for insulting Shivaji which has hurt the sentiments of masses. The professor is accused of using derogatory remarks against Chhatrapati Shivaji on whatsapp group. He started the conversation by asking as to why Shivaji’s birthday is celebrated twice a year. This aggravated the masses and they attacked the professor the very next day.

As per reports, Commerce Prof. Sunil Waghmare(38) was arrested by the Khopol Police on 16 th March since he caused an agitation by circulating insulting comments on Shivaji in a whatsapp group. The professor is department head for Commerce in KMC college of Khalapur. According to Hindu calendar, the nation celebrates Shivaji’s birthday on 15 th March. The state government officially celebrates this on 19 th February. As per historical data, 19 th Feb is considered to be Shivaji’s real birth date. It has been reported that Prof.Waghmare circulated the concerning message on the night of 15 th March in the whatsapp group. Professor has been sent in judicial custody According to Inspector Swati Shinde, “Professor’s remarks had agitated the group members. Group admin deleted that group the very same night. The next morning, a number of students and college professors attacked Waghmare. They demanded the arrest of Waghmare for insulting Shivaji. We believe that the words used against Shivaji were extremely insulting and the cause of people’s agitation. Hence we arrested Waghmare and phones of Waghmare and the complainants have been kept in police custody.
