A massive landslide occured near Helang, 15km from Joshimath, blocking the National Highway 58 route to Badrinath. In all, the journey of around 20,000 pilgrims has been affected, albeit temporarily due to the landslide that occurred at 6pm on 4 May 2023. Pillgrims from the Mewar region of Rajasthan are also a part of this troupe. Fortunately, no lives have been lost and no injuries have been reported, as per Chandrashekhar Gehlot of Sai Tourism, who led a group of pilgrims from Udaipur.

Speaking to national media (TOI), the district disaster management officer from Chamoli, Nand Kishore Joshi informed that as soon as the information on the landslide was received, the vehicles coming towards Helang were stopped at Pipalkoti. The roads have been reopened as the time of updating this post. The landslide reportedly took place near the construction site of the under construction Char Dham all-weathered road project.
